Vent

I have been debating on whether or not to post this post because essentially it's just a total bitch fest. But it needs to come out.

Everyone who i love and feel very deeply connected to is thousands of miles away. It makes grieving on this level very hard.

the redwoods forests.
the unruly Pacific Ocean.
The abundance of organic produce.
The beyond amazing yoga teachers.
... there are good things about this area.
i try to stay focused on them most of time.
especially because i am already a battling so much.
but it's time for me to come clean.

I F'ing HATE living here in Humboldt county.

There it is.
For those who are in my life, they have heard it more times then i'd like to admit.
But when i say that- i try, i realllllllly try to like it here.
Grieving on top of the already bad taste in my mouth for this place though makes it even harder to see the silver linings. The good in no way make the bad more bearable.

I could list all the reasons I don't like it here but i won't find that to be therapeutic.
Bottom line is, it's the people here.
There are not enough words to articulate how much i do not fit in here with these people which is not a problem that i have ever experienced before in my life.
I have put in so much effort and time into trying to love it here and it always falls flat.

Even more so since Truman died.
No joke, it is literally like there was a memo sent out and i'm the town outcast.
Because this is a small area, it is very cliquey.
There isn't a huge abundance of job listing but what have gone out I am perfectly capable of doing.
I have been searching for a job for 5 months now. I have sent out so many resumes and followed up and people just don't even respond to you.
I am on my game. I am reliable. I stand by my word. I am never late. I take some things seriously.
I feel like i am constantly living in an alternate universe here because people don't care about those qualities here.

I have tried to let go of it all.
Tried to be more relaxed.
That didn't work either.
I have tried everything.
So now I am just angry.

I am grieving. I have lost old friends, the ones who I thought i never would.
And the newer friends too. There are friends that I am still forced to see occasionally around town that make me feel like crap because they don't care about me or Truman and they don't understand.

These friends mean something to Jeff, so i try my best to put on a face for him and fake a social life.
But these "friends" tend to be the flakey -absent minded types, the ones who may have done a little too many recreational drugs in their hay days and now appear to be perpetually half in the clouds. I love them for who they are but you can not trust them, their word means nothing. Literally, the type that call you at 5:30 and tell you to meet up with them at their place to eat dinner in an hour and then when you show up at 6:30, no one is home, no one called to tell you that they decided to go out to dinner instead (true story).
They just are not capable people. They are not capable of being good friends, which i don't blame them for but it adds to the isolation.

Anyways,
This past winter when Jeff and I went on that long road trip to Florida and back, Jeff asked if one of his best friends could stay at out house to "house sit for us". I was very much against it, voiced my concerns but somehow Jeff talked me into saying okay. I did it because Jeff's friend needed a place to stay, I wanted to help him and his girlfriend out.
I was having so much anxiety about leaving CA since T had died and our very small and cozy place has become VERY sacred to me.  Especially with leaving Truman's ashes out at home, all alone while we were away. I was terrified that the house guests would break or ruin something of his that we wouldn't be able to get back.  I am already an extremely private person. If it was up to me I would never have people come over to my house unless it was family. I feel that strongly inside but i still invite friends over... I realize being so private that maybe it's not a healthy thing. But I tend to feel safer when i have a sacred place that is just my own.
This friend of ours, his aunt and uncle live here in town. His Aunt is one of my closest friends here in Hum.
Yesterday (5 months after this trip) I was at the Co-op after yoga class and i ran into Aunt. Aunt had another niece with her that i had never met yet. Aunt informed me right away that this niece had stayed at my place over winter break...... i thought she was kidding. It caught me completely off guard. But she brought it up so nonchalantly, like "Oh yeah, niece, that place you stayed at this winter, that is her place!! Nice huh??"
She wasn't kidding.
I felt the anger rise up in me and i did nothing.
I listened politely.
Once i got into the car i started thinking about how completely F'ed up that is!!!!!!!!!!!
It is just so beyond disrespectful and invasive.
Aunt knows how i feel about my personal space because she is the same exact way. She joked that, "she just kept shipping All the kids over to my place."
I don't even want to know what "All the kids" means.
While this may not upset someone else, I am beside myself on this one. To think of a stranger sleeping in my bed, looking at my pictures of Truman, touching his stuff, touching my stuff.
I'm sure niece is a very nice person but HELL NO.
It's as simple as calling us and giving us a heads up or asking. What a crazy idea, right?
If the situations were reversed and this happened to Aunt, Aunt would FLIP.
I feel so disrespected by Aunt and said friend that they have lost my respect. I wish i could say that i am more forgiving then that but i'm not.
I protect myself just as fiercely as i would protect Truman.

and this is the reoccurring problem here in Hum.
people are thoughtless. They think everything is always not a big deal.
they don't think about how their actions effect other people.
so i end up weeding these people out of my life because they don't have respect for me and they aren't the kind of friend that i look for and it leaves me so isolated.
Grieving and isolated. With no job, no way to make a fresh start, and still finding out every day how little people give a shit
On top of the grieving, this is also suppose to be a time in my life where i am surrounded by close friends and family... celebrating my engagement. and then my wedding.
This is the most un-celebratory time of my life.
Not that i expected it to be different because Truman is always missing.
But again, it's another loss, the loss of what i always wanted for myself. I would be having a completely different experience if i wasn't here in Humboldt.
maybe that counsellor was right.... maybe i do have resentment for being here. I just don't understand how my life turned into such a shit show. and trying to constantly see the positive is becoming so incredibly exhausting.

  1. I am exactly the same way about my home and my "stuff".

I get every word you wrote...only I would never be able to hold it all in, I tend not to excel at tact. I wonder if she reads your blog, if so...watch OUT!

    1. I doubt that she reads my blog, and if she did i would be glad that she knows the truth. In fact i wish everyone in Humboldt read my blog, lol.
It's the best friend too, i mean, either of them could have called me and just asked.
I am sure we will confront both of them with time. I just feel anger right now and i don't want to blow up and make things worse.

  2. It's so hard being disappointed, abandoned, disrespected over and over and over. Isay move here to Clovis. Not because I think its a rad spot but so we could be together. It's a lonely place in griefland regardless of where your home may be. It always seems that the loss multiplies and spreads and grows deeper hurts. I'm sorry you can't love such a beautiful place because of the ugly people. I wish I could walk with you and hug you and say I understand. Sending love and a giant hug.

    1. I would love to hang out with you Renel! I keep on trying to push Jeff to apply for grad school at UC Davis.... anywhere that isn't 6 hours away from a major city would be a step in the right direction :P , but we shall see.

  3. I do not blame you for one second. I would have lost my shit on her. WHO DOES THAT?

I am so sorry you're not happy where you are. I feel lucky that my mom and dad are close by, but even then, it can be hard here at times.

Sending you love and peace. (actually, lots and lots of peace.... the peace not to choke some fool out)

  4. I'm sorry, Laura. That was very disrespectful to you and your husband, and I would be upset, too. I also know how it is to feel alienated by your surroundings. There are things to appreciate about this area, but I really don't feel like I fit in--one of those reasons being that it's so conservative here.

Maybe I wouldn't truly feel at ease anywhere, though. Nearby lurks the hospital where my baby died....But she also lived there, and here, in this odd, pergatory-like place.

Having also lived in Humboldt, my husband seems to think that it's just a matter of a general increase in flakiness everywhere. I don't know. People in my home town and state (Colorado) seem less so, but then again, I haven't lived there for almost 5 years now.

    Sending hugs. xo

    1. I know what you mean... i don't think i would feel totally at ease anywhere either now that all of this has happened. I really miss the east coast and being within driving distance to my family (even if it was states away). I lived here for a year before i moved to Florida and i hated it then too. For some reason this place is against my grain. This second time around i was scared to come back but I was hopeful and it has gotten a little better but it's still just not for me at all.
I tend to like less conservative places myself and i wouldn't say that this place is too liberal for me, it's just the people that i have been around here haven't been for me. I know so many people that LOVE it here and they don't understand how i can dislike it so much, which again feeds the isolation.
I think this place is more of a guys place too. There is only so much hiking and oneness with nature that a girl like me can handle (and i'm a pretty outdoorsy girl). i do like stores and the option to occasionally go in them (all they really have here is a Target-- there is no Gap, no Macy's, no Old Navy- no normal stores). I'm not even a big shopper at all but i think it helps people realize how small and removed this place is (which is both good and bad). It's an a amazing place to visit but I always dread day to day life when i am here and now that Truman's gone it's even more magnified. I think it's also that everything was SO amazing for me on the east coast, I had so many opportunities there to work in and around my life long dreams surrounded by people who understood where i was coming from.
But anyways i'm just rambling now. I feel like the cranky kid who is over the long/boring camping trip and is bitching in the back of the car "are we home yet?" lol
Thank for chiming in, I always love hearing form you. xo

  5. I know people here in SoCal have a reputation for being flaky, too - is it a CA thing? Not to make light of it, though - it sucks that you don't have a good community there, and I hope you guys are able to eventually move somewhere more welcoming and comfortable.

I am a very private person, too (even moreso since Elizabeth died) and I would be truly angry if I found out someone was using my house as a B&B while I was away without asking me first...that's really upsetting. :(

    1. Thank you for the validation SG. <3 I wish i was in SoCal, I think the sun would help my attitude. The rain, the grey and the fog don't help, that is for sure.

  7. Yeah, Laura Beck, you don't sound weird to me. At *all.* I would be very ripped off, and determined that none of those morons would get another swipe at my personal space.

Maybe it's partly an "introvert" thing? (Introvert, not shy. I am not shy. But I like space. And quiet. You?)

Okay - what do you think about this? It sounds like there's kind of a "boundary-less" culture around there...where everyone is saying, "What's the big deal? My stuff is your stuff is my stuff. My time is your time is my time. My business is your business is my business. Who cares?"

But the truth is, normal, functional, separate adults HAVE boundaries. They realize when they treat each other without respect, relationship and depth suffer.

Yes, I know some are more uptight and some less (I'm more, at least in some people's books) - but I still say that boundaries are necessary. Otherwise the Takers just take and take, while the Givers get screwed.

Meanwhile, the biggest Serial Killer (not verified, I always note - but with high aptitude) I *ever* dated was from Humboldt. He "allowed" me to pay for the repairs on his stupid car when we drove there for a visit. Since I had no boundaries at the time, I allowed this to happen.

    Not No More, Sister.

All this to say, rant away any old time, and guard your space like a tiger. More power to 'ya.

xoxo Cathy in Missouri (& always with love for Truman)

  8. Hey, and since I can't seem to get enough of this lately - I'll ask if you read there, too?

(No. I'm not on Neil's payroll or a groupie, in spite of what it looks like. I just don't get that many opportunities to laugh. When I do, I spread them around.)

It's only getting better. Maybe you can listen to the soundtrack while you clean house in Humboldt. Literally.

    Love you, Laura Beck!

  9. Losing Seamus put a few things into sharp perspective for me... one of those was how much I was living a life that was, as you put it, "against my grain". I'm not a city person, and yet I've lived in London (UK) for years now. I'm not happy here. There's no sense of community... it's only nice for about 2 months of the year when the sun shines - the rest of the time it's just grey and wet and depressing. People here just don't give a damn. It's a rat race.

And the reason I live here? Because I'm a lawyer, and here is where the work opportunities are... but, I don't like being a lawyer either... I guess I was pretending at that too.

Seamus has shown me what's important in life - family, true friends... A simple home - a little haven of respite.
John and I want to move now and both of our sons give us reason and courage to make that change. It sounds like little Truman is giving you a gentle nudge too - when circumstances allow.

And for what it's worth, I had to scrape my jaw off the floor when I read about that Aunt... I mean, REALLY!?
